Has this Great Recession created a great depression in the collective psyche of the modern world? The Brits recently reported that in 2008 -- in the early stages of the recession -- their suicide rate statistically rose for the first time in two decades and there's some growing evidence of that in the U.S. too. Many of us have woken to the grim news that a friend or colleague has chosen to take their life. In the past two years, I've experienced this news five different times -- from my insurance agent of 15 years to a business school classmate who had a hedge fund -- and each time it reminds me of that Henry David Thoreau quote: "The cost of something is measured by how much life you have to give for it." In some cases, the cost of our jobs is killing us. Literally.

There's no pie chart that defines the primary influences for why people commit suicide (because it's obviously hard to get perfectly accurate data when the subjects are no longer living). But, there's growing research that shows that a combination of financial woes and a sense that people felt professionally or emotionally worthless are more apparent as causes during this recession. Our aspirational treadmill in America is set on a pretty fast speed and with a stubborn 10% unemployment rate, it's not surprising that many of us feel like we're falling behind Donald Trump and the role models of personal manifest destiny we see paraded on TV.

When I was young, my greatest goal was to be great. Making my mark on the world was sort of my way of knowing I existed. I succeed, therefore I am. Even that master of mid-20th century humanistic psychology, Abraham Maslow, said that one of the favorite questions he'd ask his students at the start of the term was, "Which of you believe you will attain greatness?" He was always surprised how few people raised their hand, but at the end of the term when he asked the question again, the majority of his class would raise their hand.

Maybe it's time for us to start asking a different question. As David Brooks pointed out in the New York Times last month ("The Sandra Bullock Trade"), the relationship between happiness and income is complicated, and, after some modest income level, tenuous. Maybe the question we should be asking is, "Are we happy?" And the question behind that question might be, "Are we grateful?"

There's a growing body of research that shows it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but it's gratefulness that makes us happy. Doing just a few hours of writing in a gratitude journal over three weeks can create a positive effect that last six months or more. And, psychologist Robert Emmons has shown that practicing proactive gratitude can increase happiness levels by 25%.

During the last downturn, one of the leadership practices we put in place at my company to ritualize gratitude and recognition was ten minutes at the end of our Executive Committee meetings when each of the 15 top leaders could mention some employee in the company who'd been caught doing something right. As we shared these stories during that recession, it reminded us that positive things were happening and then someone else at the table would volunteer to go say thanks to that employee. Over the past eight years, as the CEO, I've probably given an in-depth personal thank you to more than 100 individual employees based upon this weekly management exercise and I know that I got just as much out of offering the gratitude as the employee did in receiving the recognition.

When I was growing up, I thought gratitude was a form of passivity. By being grateful, I was sort of acknowledging some kind of lack of ambition or a low standard. What I've come to realize is that gratitude is a contagious fuel. Like a match that can light a thousand candles, gratitude has a multiplying effect and it doesn't cost a thing to exercise.

Life and business is all about where you pay your attention. Maybe it's time to shift our attention from lionizing business books like Good to Great to teaching people it's good to be grateful. Ironically, being grateful to those around you will likely help make you great.

I find this really interesting and would have, without thinking, said that I totally agree with this… but upon thinking about it I realized I did exactly what you’re advising to not do - but it worked for me.

1.5 years ago my husbands co-worked bought a $3,000 camera. I had always been interested in photography but other than taking pictures of my son with my point and shoot I knew NOTHING about it. This co-worker offered to LEND me his brand new camera for a day (I still can’t believe he did that!!)

I spent the entire day taking pictures. I borrowed friends, I dressed up my kids, I posed my husband - I literally took over 1,000 photographs in that one day. And some of them were pretty decent.

Inspired by that single event I decided I wanted the $3,000 camera. I sold a bunch of stuff on craigslist and three days later had made $400. It was a huge headway, but not nearly enough.

I drooled over the camera in the local store and talked with a sales rep at great length. He convinced me that I didn’t actually need the $3,000 camera (what an awesome sales man! He was looking out for me, not his sales!) and I went home and researched the lesser expensive one, which, with a kit lens, was $1,500.

I attempted various ways to come up with more money, but as a stay at home mom with two young boys I didn’t get much over $500 in two weeks time.

Then my husband said - “I am just going to buy it for you.”

I had used a DSLR ONCE in my life.

I had no idea what aperature or ISO or bokeh was.

But he bought it for me (we did have savings, it wasn’t debt.)

I have used that camera nearly EVERY single day since I got it almost 1.5 years ago. I have taught myself how to shoot manually and what was once a mere interest in photograph has turned into a passion.

I know for certain that I wouldn’t have sat down and figured out the intricacies of better picture taking if I didn’t have a nice camera in hand to challenge me.

So while I agree with the principle of what you are saying I believe there are most definitely exceptions… I just don’t know how to define what those exceptions are

Maybe have your spouse buy the expensive gadgets for you and then you’ll not want to let them down and have them “Waste” their money on a hobby you don’t use?!?!?

    Dearest readers,

How did you like our first book club selection, Dolly Freed's Possum Living: How to Live Well Without a Job and With (Almost) No Money? I thoroughly enjoyed it—aside from some mild retching at the thought of removing a turtle's gallbladder (a necessary step for a proper snapper soup)—and came away feeling amused, inspired, and challenged. But enough about my insights; I'm much more interested in your inklings.

In the first chapter, Freed writes, "People don't own possessions, their possessions own them," and, "We have and get the good things in life so easily it seems silly to go to some boring, meaningless, frustrating job to get the money to buy them, yet almost everyone does. 'Earning their way in life,' they call it. 'Slavery,' I call it."

What do you think about what Freed's saying here? Do you think you're a slave to your job or possessions? I saw a distinct connection between this concept and Annie Leonard's The Story of Stuff, in which Leonard describes the neverending treadmill of working to buy stuff, collapsing exhaustedly after work in front of the TV, where we're told to buy more stuff, going back to work to earn more money to buy said stuff, and so on. What do you think about the relationship between Freed's and Leonard's messages?

Let's get the discussion rolling in the comments below. I'll pop in with feedback throughout the day. And stay tuned tomorrow for more queries and conversation starters. We'll stick with the Possum Living discussion through Friday, when I'll announce the next book selection, which we'll be dissecting in May. (You can follow along with all the book club posts here.)

Bruce Springsteen had an affair with a 45-year-old New Jersey housewife who ran next to him at the gym, according to court papers filed as part of her divorce proceedings. Weirdly, the Post reports she looked a lot like Patti Scialfa, his bandmate and wife of 18 years.

The other woman, Ann Kelly, didn’t hold down a job, instead she spent money on self improvement measures like plastic surgery and a gym membership at the Atlantic Club, where she supposedly became acquainted with the singer beginning in 2005. Papers submitted by her husband Aruthur Kelly, who's seeking the divorce, say Springsteen would stand at the end of her treadmill and told her she had the "nicest ass" in the place. Soon the singer and his gym buddy were having lunch, and bringing her two kids along.

A the pair got closer, the liberal leaning blue-collar icon gave Kelly, a conservative, books to read and told her he’d thought about her while on tour, the documents claim. He personally delivered front-row tickets to attend rehearsals, after which Kelly told her husband’s mother "It felt like Bruce Springsteen was singing to me." All the while Aruthur Kelly was aware at least of an infatuation with the singer since, according to the papers, Springsteen was a frequent topic of conversation in chats with a marriage counselor.

A new patent application from Apple describes an exercise motivation feature that presents a "virtual competitor," providing an "interactive and engaging experience" for fitness enthusiasts.

The application revealed this week, entitled "Real-Time Interaction with a Virtual Competitor While Performing an Exercise Routine," notes that while there are currently a variety of methods designed to push athletes farther, some people want something even more engaging.

Fitness enthusiasts sometimes need new sources of motivation, such as when training indoors during inclement weather," the application reads. "Modern health clubs partly serve this need by providing television monitors and music to entertain members using treadmills, stationary bicycles, elliptical trainers, and other fitness equipment. Products like the Nike+iPod Sports Kit provide workout-based voice feedback, motivational media, and the ability to share workouts among Nike+community members."

The application describes a networked system that could download a workout file associated with the virtual competitor. The system could also determine the performance of the athlete using the iPod or iPhone, and compare their performance with that of the virtual competitor.

Such a system could track the "performance metrics" of the user in both physiological terms, such s heart rate, blood oxygen content and temperature, and non-physiological performance indicators, like speed and distance.

As for the competitor, the system could display visual cues, such as location, via GPS, on Google Maps, demonstrating the user's position relative to the virtual opponent. The system could also be done audibly, allowing a runner to focus on their performance.

"For example, as user passes the 2-mile mark, an audible cue played through the headset may announce a 2-mile split of 10:27," the application reads. "If user has a lead cues may be played if the lead is less than a predetermined distance. For example, if the lead is less than 100 feet, an audible cue may be played, such as 'He's right behind you.' For smaller leads, an audile cue may be the sound of footsteps thumping."

If a user were running indoors on a treadmill, cycle, or elliptical machine, the virtual competitor system could be turned into a game, where the runner can conduct "tactical maneuvers," tracked with a camera, that can be use to complete certain actions. The competitor, represented by a virtual avatar, could potentially be crowded out by the user with a hands-free mouse, and such actions in the game could earn the runner points.

Have you ever thought how cool it would be if your treadmill could take you on a virtual jog through nature so you could watch something more scenic than the gym wall while you run? Well, your day is coming.

Virtual Active, which lets you access a library of running, hiking, and biking workouts filmed live in beautiful outdoor locations, is releasing a free half hour sample of its virtual exercise experience for download on iTunes on March 1.

Virtual Active is also working with cardio equipment manufacturer Johnson Health Tech, the #4 manufacturer of cardio equipment, and The Indoorcycling Group, a leading European indoor cycling company. Johnson’s 7xe line of Matrix Cardio equipment will automatically adjust the treadmill incline to mimic the terrain in the video, adjust the speed of video playback based on the user’s running speed, and provide on-location nature audio (in the case of cardio-enabled downloads, the video would not be able to provide such interactivity). In addition, these manufacturers plan to introduce SyncStep, which will allow users to hear the sounds of their steps over the terrain as they run or walk. For example, when running on a wooded trail, the user might hear crunching leaves underfoot each time their foot hits the tread.

The company has perfected filming while running at 12-14 mph paces for smooth video playback, all shot in HD. Virtual Active will also be introducing its commercial equipment to health clubs on March 10 at the International Racquet and Sports Club Association (IHRSA) fitness trade show in San Diego.

Videos of the location-based workouts, which include Yellowstone, Yosemite, Niagara Falls, Mount Rushmore, and the Grand Tetons, will be sold on DVD for $19.95, as downloads for $9.95, on Blu-ray disc or as part of specially-equipped cardio equipment packages.

The company will be launching their full online store May 1, where users can downloads instructional videos by fitness professionals as well as upbeat workout tunes from music provider Rumblefish, which can be played on any iPod-compatible fitness equipment or can be burned to DVD and watched at home.

The company’s business model is a mix of software sales and manufacturing partnerships on which it is paid per unit of cardio equipment sold as well as the majority of the revenue from additional content downloads. It also has a Passport Player, a standalone web-connected media player that health clubs can install to conduct classes and would be based on a monthly subscription. In addition, it is exploring brand associations and partnerships, in which a billboard along a running route or the instructor’s fitness gear would be provided by a sponsor. I was able to view some mockups, and these opportunities are not at all intrusive to the user’s fitness experience but offer brands prominent product placement throughout the video.

Johnson Health Tech and The Indoorcycling Group also have a partnership with Livestrong that will include Virtual Active’s content for Livestrong-branded equipment.

Virtual Active was founded by John Ford, who is a runner and has also played competitive soccer, after he left his job in corporate accounting at Clorox, in 2006. The company is based in San Francisco and has 10 full-time employees. The privately held company has received $2.5 million in funding from friends and family to date. Most competitors, such as Trixter and Expresso, focus on cycling, whereas Virtual Active is focusing on the full range of cardio equipment, including mountain biking, running and hiking for treadmills and ellipticals, and steep hiking on step machines, said Ford. “By Fitting entertainment to a person’s favorite exercise and not making them change modalities,” Ford believes the market for Virtual Active is quadrupled.

While all the locations filmed are in the US, The company will be filming locations in Germany and Italy in April and Australia and New Zealand later this year. It hopes to film locations all over the world, said Ford. Ford said his goals for the company include acquiring some powerful brand partnerships, expanding the content library to cover the globe, and increasing Virtual Active’s distribution to every place screens exist in the fitness world.

There's a reason why radio and outdoor (billboard) advertising together became a $30bn to $50bn annual domestic market. When people are mobile, like driving a car, they are not reading, they are not watching video, they are not opening email. At least they should not be doing those sorts of things while driving a car.

While radio and billboards will still be attractive advertising opportunities for some time to come, there is a new way to reach the mobile consumer - on his or her phone.

I'm not talking about calling you or text messaging you on your phone. I am talking about when you connect your android phone into your car's audio jack or when you put on your iPhone headphones and hop on the treadmill at the gym.

In these situations, you are likely listening to audio and increasingly streaming audio. That audio stream can contain commercial messaging if it is done right. And because the phone, as opposed to the car radio or the billboard, knows a lot about you, including where you are, the messaging can be targeted (ie made relevant).

This is the opportunity our portfolio company TargetSpot was built to go after. When the company was started, it decided to focus on terrestrial radio companies and help them monetize their internet streams. It is the leader in that market today. Then it added "pure play internet radio" providers like Yahoo! Music, MySpace Music, and AOL Radio to it's network and further solidified its lead.

And today, TargetSpot is rolling out its first mobile audio advertising service, in partnership with Slacker. If you want to reach people who are listening to streaming audio via their phones in their cars, in the gym, at work, and at home you now can do that via TargetSpot.

Slacker is one of several streaming audio companies focused on the mobile phone. Others include Pandora and Last.fm. I expect we'll see hundreds of providers over time.

And I expect that we'll find out that the audio format is one of the most powerful forms of mobile advertising. Just like it has been in the offline world for the past century.
